Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese moeda de ouro.
Etymology: < Portuguese moeda de ouro, lit. ‘coin of gold’ < moeda money n. + de of + ouro gold ( < classical Latin aurum : see auro- comb. form). Compare French moëda (1842; 1721 as moede, 1833 as moëde).
A Portuguese gold coin current in England and its colonies in the first half of the 18th cent., then worth about 27 shillings (now historical). Hence colloquial: †the sum of 27 shillings (obsolete). Also more generally (usually in plural): any gold coin. Cf. doubloon n.
