Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: mono- comb. form, saccharide n.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + saccharide n., after French monosaccharide (1860 or earlier). Compare slightly earlier disaccharide n., polysaccharide n.With the form monosaccharid perhaps compare German Monosaccharid (1888; probably after French).
Biochemistry.
A sugar which cannot be hydrolysed to give simpler sugars.
