Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: mono- comb. form, sperm n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + sperm n. + -ic suffix. In sense 1 probably after French monospermique (1846) or scientific Latin monospermicus (see below). In sense 2 after German monosperm (O. Hertwig & R. Hertwig 1887, in Jenaische Zeitschr. 20 149). Compare earlier monosperm adj. and n., monospermal adj., monospermatous adj., monospermous adj.For scientific Latin monospermicus in sense 1, compare:1856 J. S. Henslow Dict. Bot. Terms 110 Monospermicus, Monospermus, a fruit which contains only one seed.1857 R. G. Mayne Expos. Lexicon Med. Sci. (1860) Monospermicus, the same as Monospermus.
