Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μονο- , στίχος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + στίχος row, line (see stich n.) + -ous suffix; compare -stichous comb. form. With sense 1 compare earlier monostic adj. In sense 2 after distichous adj., tristichous adj.R. G. Mayne gives a Latin form monostichus (see quot. 1857 at sense 1).
1. Mineralogy. Designating a mineral occurring in prismatic crystals whose facets intersect at various different angles. Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.

2. Biology. Arranged in a single vertical row, rank, or series on one side of an axis, as the flowers of certain grasses. Cf. earlier distichous adj.
