Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Moko n.1, jumbie n.
Etymology: Apparently < Moko n.1 (see etymological note at that entry) + jumbie n.Masquerade stilt-dancers are attested in southern Nigeria, the region from which the ‘Moko’ were said to have originated.
Caribbean.
A traditional character in a masquerade, representing a tall robed spirit of (originally) West African legend, and played by a male dancer on high stilts who wears a brightly coloured, sometimes female costume (see jumbie n.).
