Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese mokume.
Etymology: < Japanese mokume mokume n., with loss of final -e perhaps after other English metal names in -um : compare -ium suffix. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mōu·kɒ̆m) /ˈməʊkəm/.
Obsolete. rare.
An alloy used in decorative metalwork to create a woodgrain pattern. Cf. mokume n.
