Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Polish lexical item. Etymons: mono- comb. form, chorial adj.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + chorial adj., after Polish monochorialny (A. Rosner 1901, in Bull. Internat. de l'Acad. des Sci. de Cracovie No. 8. 443). Compare slightly earlier monochorionic adj.

1902 Jrnl. Royal Microsc. Soc. 159 A. Rosner discusses the numerous theories as to the origin of monochorial twins.
1917 H. H. Newman Biol. of Twins 6 Monochorial twins are surrounded by a single chorionic membrane. Usually a single chorion covers but one embryo and comes from a single egg; hence it is customarily assumed that the monochorial condition implies a monozygotic condition.
