Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin monoculus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin monoculus (see monoculus n.). Compare French monocule one-eyed creature (1775 in Voltaire; 1611 in Cotgrave as adjective), Spanish monóculo (17th cent.).

1. Zoology. Any aquatic arthropod originally placed in the Linnaean genus Monoculus (see monoculus n. 3), esp. a cladoceran water-flea. In quot. 1829: a thing appearing as minute as a water-flea.
