A term applied, by modern critics, to music written in what is sometimes called the Homophonic Style: that is to say, music, in which the Melody is confined to a single part, instead of being equally distributed between all the Voices employed, as in the Polyphonic Schools.
1924 C. H. Kitson Evol. of Harmony (ed. 2) i. 12 The system of chords was at its inception termed Homophony or Monodia. Sometimes these terms are used in the same sense, namely, to designate music in which the melody is assigned to one part only, the other parts accompanying it with chords.
