Etymology: < French molasse, mollasse (1669, at first primarily in Swiss French, spreading to central French from the use by H. B. de Saussure in 1779), use as noun of molasse , adjective (a1630 in pierres molasses ), probably < classical Latin mollis (see moll adj. and n.¹) + French -asse , augmentative suffix ( < classical Latin -ācea , feminine of -āceus : see -aceous suffix), with form altered after French (regional) mole , variant of meule millstone (see mullet n.³). Compare post-classical Latin molacia (feminine) type of sandstone (1410 in a document from Geneva; also as molaci (ablative) 1411).

Geology.

Originally (formerly also with capital initial): a deposit of soft greenish sandstone mixed with marls and fossiliferous conglomerates, of Miocene to Oligocene age, found along the northern edge of the Alps. Later also (more generally): any thick paralic sedimentary deposit formed after a period of orogeny and consisting of soft, ungraded sandstones, shales, marls, etc.
