单词 molebat
释义

molebatn.

Forms: 1500s–1600s molebout, 1600s molebaut, 1600s moleboute, 1600s molebut, 1600s mole-butt, 1600s mole-pout (transmission error), 1700s–1800s molebat, 1800s–1900s molebut.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French molebout.
Etymology: < Middle French molebout (1554, in an isolated example, in which the word may in fact represent an Occitan word written with Middle French spelling conventions): see further below. Compare slightly later mole n.6Middle French molebout is recorded by G. Rondelet in De Piscibus Marinis and explained by him to be a compound of Occitan mòla (see mole n.6) and the Catalan synonym bot (Rondelet uses Middle French spelling conventions): 1554 G. Rondelet De Piscibus Marinis 424 Mola in nostro mari aliquando capitur, sed rarissime... Massilienses mole vocant a rotunditate, quod molae molendinariae similis sit. Hispani bout appellant. Nonnulli ex nostris qui Provinciam, Hispaniamque frequentarunt, utraque conjuncta appellatione molebout nominant. The second element is apparently frequently assimilated to butt n.1 In form mole-pout probably conflated with pout n.1, and in form molebat perhaps with bat n.1: however, compare also turbot n. and forms s.v. Both Occitan mola and Catalan bot designate the sunfish, Mola mola. In the passage translated in quot. 1601 Pliny has classical Latin porcus , lit. ‘pig’, the fish probably being so called on account of the grunting noises it makes (see quot. 1598). This may in turn have led to confusion with porpoise n. (see quot. 1672).
Obsolete.
The ocean sunfish, Mola mola; = mola n.1 2. Cf. mole n.6 1.
