Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymon: demonstrative adj.
Etymology: Shortened < demonstrative adj., to correspond to ancient Greek δεικτικός deictic adj. and n. as contrasted with ἀποδεικτικός apodictic adj. (both Greek words appear in the text of Coke: see quot. 1653). Compare post-classical Latin monstrativus (6th cent. in Boethius' translation of Aristotle), Middle French monstratif (late 15th cent.).
Logic. Obsolete. rare.
Designating or relating to a type of syllogism supposedly differing from the usual demonstrative or apodictic syllogism of Aristotle. Cf. deictical adj.
