Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Or (iii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin monstruositas ; monstruous adj.; Latin mōnstruōsus , -ity suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin monstruositas condition of being abnormal (13th cent. in British sources; < classical Latin mōnstruōsus monstruous adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix)), or independently < monstruous adj. or its etymon classical Latin mōnstruōsus + -ity suffix. Compare Middle French monstruosité abnormality in the formation of the human body (1488), prodigy, marvel (1518), anomalous animal or plant formation (16th cent.), Italian mostruosità (a1565), Spanish monstruosidad (1428), Portuguese monstruosidade (16th cent.).In quot. 1978 after Spanish monstruosidad.
