Etymology: < French montagnes russes roller-coaster, lit. ‘Russian mountains’ (1816 or earlier denoting an elevation or construction from which a sledge is released down a particular course, 1817 in Les Montagnes Russes à Belleville , the name of an early roller-coaster in Paris) < the plural of montagne mountain n. + russe Russian (see Russ adj.), with reference to the popularity in Russia of the winter sport. Compare Italian montagne russe ( < French), Spanish montaña rusa (1842; after French).Not fully naturalized in English. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (moṅtany rüs) /mɔ̃taɲ rys/.
