Etymology: < the name of Michel de Montaigne (1533–92), French philosopher and essayist + -esque suffix. Compare French montaignesque (1923 or earlier). Compare earlier Montaignish adj. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives the pronunciation (moṅtēine·sk) /mɔ̃teɪˈnɛsk/.
Of or relating to Montaigne; having the characteristics of Montaigne's writings, esp. in being sceptical or questioning in tone and essayistic in style.
