Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian montante.
Etymology: < Italian montante (1410 in this sense), use as noun of montante , present participle of montare to rise (see mount v.). Compare French montant (1606 denoting a sword cut), Spanish montante broadsword (1611).In form montaunto probably after Italian masculine nouns in -o , especially those borrowed earlier into English fencing terminology, as e.g. passado n.; compare punto n.2

A blow or cut directed upwards.
