Etymology: < scientific Latin Montbretia (A. P. de Candolle 1803, in Bull. de la Soc. Philomathique 3 151) < the name of A. F. E. Coquebert de Montbret (1780–1801), French botanist + -ia -ia suffix¹. Compare French montbrétie (1803 in de Candolle).

Any of various plants of the genera Crocosmia and Tritonia of the family Iridaceae (formerly regarded as members of a distinct genus Montbretia), native to tropical and southern Africa, with bright orange, yellow, or red flowers; esp. any of various cultivated varieties of the hybrid Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora. Also (in form Montbretia): the genus itself (now historical).
