Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian monte di pietà.
Etymology: < Italian monte di pietà (1462) < monte mount n.1 + di of + pietà piety n. Compare earlier Mount of Piety n.The institution was apparently founded in Perugia in 1462, as an establishment for advancing money to the poor at a reasonable rate of interest. In some of the examples below, perhaps used as the name of a particular lending house. Compare the following, apparently remodelled after French mont (compare Mont de Piété n.):a1684 J. Evelyn Diary anno 1645 (1955) II. 366 Neere this [sc. in Rome] is the Mont Pietà instituted as a banc for the poore, who..may have mony upon pawns. Not fully naturalized in English. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (mǫ·nte di pyeta) /ˈmonte di pjeta/.
