Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin motu proprio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin motu proprio on one's own initiative, spontaneously (1327, 1461 in British sources; 1437 in sense ‘papal edict’), ablative of motus proprius < classical Latin mōtus motion, movement (see mote n.3) + proprius one's own (see proper adj.). Compare Middle French, French motu proprio spontaneously, without being urged (mid 16th cent. in reference to papal edicts; mid 19th cent. in sense A.; mid 16th cent. as noun in sense ‘papal edict’), Italian motuproprio (a1498 in sense ‘on one's own initiative’; 1549 as noun in sense ‘papal edict’).
