Etymology: < classical Latin Morpheus, Ovid's name for the god of dreams, the son of Somnus (Sleep), as if < ancient Greek μορϕή form (see -morph comb. form), with reference to his ability to take on the form of any person; Ovid ( Metamorphoses 11. 635) uses classical Latin figūra figure n.
