Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin morphosis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin morphosis act of forming, shaping (12th cent. in British and continental sources) < Hellenistic Greek μόρϕωσις formation, shaping, configuration (in astronomy: see quot. 1675 at sense 1a), form, semblance < ancient Greek μορϕοῦν to shape, fashion ( < μορϕή form: see -morph comb. form) + -ωσις -osis suffix. Compare earlier metamorphosis n.In sense 2 after German Morphose ( G. Eisenmann Die vegetativen Krankheiten u. die entgiftende Heilmethode (1835) 63).
