Etymology: In sense 1 < moon n.1 + -er suffix1, after post-classical Latin lunarius (1570 in the passage translated in quot. 1576 at sense 1), itself probably arising from a misreading of limarius (see lyam-hound n.). In sense 2 < moon v. + -er suffix1. In sense 3 < moon v. or moon n.1 + -er suffix1.
1. A kind of mastiff said to bark incessantly at the moon. Obsolete.
