Etymology: < French mort-de-chien (1702 or earlier), alteration by folk-etymology (as though < mort mort n.1 + de de prep. + chien dog: see croc-chien n.) of Portuguese mordexim (/mɔrdeˈʃĩ/): see mordisheen n.
Obsolete.
Cholera.A name used for the disease by Europeans in India.
