Origin: A borrowing from Cree. Etymon: Cree môniya:s.
Etymology: < Plains Cree môniya:s non-Indian, white person (also 1873 or earlier in sense ‘man from (Lower) Canada, newcomer’), diminutive of môniya:w (in the same senses) < Southern Algonquian mo:niya:winini < mo:niya: Montreal ( < French Montréal : see Montreal n.) + -inini man.
Canadian. derogatory.
Esp. among North American Indians in Canada: a newcomer; (also) a white person.

c1880 in Dict. Canadianisms (1967) (at cited word) There was always an extra cake put on for appearance sake and it was a sure sign of a ‘tenderfoot’ or a ‘moonias’ to eat that extra cake.
