Etymology: < mucor n. + mycosis n., after German Mucormykose (O. Teutschlaender 1916, in Mitteilungen aus den Grenzgebieten der Med. u. Chir. 29 127).
Medicine.
Infection of a human, other mammal, or bird with a zygomycete fungus, esp. one of the family Mucoraceae; an instance of this. Cf. phycomycosis n.In humans mucormycosis is an opportunistic infection, esp. of the paranasal sinuses, brain, respiratory tract, and skin, and is most frequently caused by fungi of the genera Rhizopus and Absidia. The name mucormycosis has occasionally been used for infection with fungi of the order Entomophthorales.
