Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mūcōsus.
Etymology: < classical Latin mūcōsus mucous, slimy < mūcus mucus n. + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare Middle French, French muqueux (1560 in Middle French; 1520 as muscose), Italian mucoso (a1698), Portuguese mucoso (c1813), Spanish mucoso (1832; 1495 as mocoso).
1. Medicine and Biology. Of the nature of, resembling, or consisting of mucus; covered with or producing mucus; resulting from the presence of mucus. Formerly also: gen. †slimy (obsolete).
