单词 mooth
释义

moothadj.

Brit. /muːθ/, U.S. /muθ/, Scottish English /muθ/
Forms: English regional (northern) 1800s– meuth, 1800s– mooth, 1900s– muth; Scottish 1700s meith (north-eastern), 1700s mieth (north-eastern), 1700s–1800s meeth (north-eastern), 1800s muth, 1800s– mooth, 1800s– muith, 1900s– meef (Caithness), 1900s– meich (southern), 1900s– meigh (southern), 1900s– meuth, 1900s– møf (chiefly Orkney and Shetland), 1900s– muff (chiefly Orkney and Shetland), 1900s– müff (chiefly Orkney and Shetland), 1900s– muif (chiefly Orkney and Shetland), 1900s– muiff (chiefly Orkney and Shetland), 1900s– muph (chiefly Orkney and Shetland).
Origin: Perhaps a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Probably the reflex of a borrowing < early Scandinavian (compare Norwegian (Nynorsk) mo close, sultry, and also Old Icelandic móða condensed vapour, mist on a warm day, haziness, Norwegian (Nynorsk) moe heat haze, and the second element in Norwegian kornmo , Danish kornmoe , both in sense ‘summer lightning’), further etymology uncertain; perhaps related to the Scandinavian base of Old Icelandic mór (see moler n.2). Compare moth adj.Forms in -f , -ph show the common replacement of /θ/ by /f/ chiefly in northern (especially Caithness) Scots. Occasional forms in ee or ei from southern Scotland perhaps show the influence of the reflex of the early Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic mœði weariness, shortness of breath (see maedi n. and compare English regional (Cumberland) methy, meuthy in the same sense).
Scottish and English regional (northern).
