Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from German. Or (ii) a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: German Mops; Dutch mops.
Etymology: < German Mops (1706; also German regional (Low German)) or the related Dutch mops (1805), further etymology uncertain (see below). Compare Swedish mops (1733; probably < German or Dutch). Compare also French mopse (1802) < German. Perhaps compare also earlier mopsy n. 3 and moppet n.2 3.German Mops and Dutch mops are perhaps related to Dutch moppen to sulk, pull a face (see mop v.2), the dog's flat snout and muzzle suggesting a sad or sulky facial expression. Compare also German Mops person who is unfriendly, morose (late 16th cent.).
