Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French morbifique; Latin morbificus.

Etymology: < Middle French morbifique causing disease (1590) or its etymon post-classical Latin morbificus causing disease (6th cent.: see note below) < classical Latin morbus disease (see morbid adj.) + -ficus -fic suffix. Compare Spanish morbífico (1600), Portuguese morbífico (17th cent.). Compare slightly earlier morbifical adj.Post-classical Latin morbificus is first recorded in Boethius, as morbifica, use as noun (short for morbifica medicamenta substances causing disease) of neuter plural of the adjective, translating ancient Greek νοσωδῶν in Aristotle, use as noun of genitive plural neuter of νοσώδης unwholesome.
