单词 mordvin
释义

Mordvinn.adj.

Brit. /ˈmɔːdvɪn/, U.S. /ˈmɔrdv(ə)n/
Inflections: Plural Mordvins, unchanged.
Forms: 1700s Morduini (plural), 1800s– Mordvine, 1900s– Mordvin.
Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian mordvin.
Etymology: < Russian mordvin, probably < mordva the Mordvin people (12th cent. in Old Russian) + -in , suffix of uncertain origin. Further etymology uncertain and disputed (see note). The people are first mentioned as post-classical Latin Mordens (6th cent.), their land as Byzantine Greek Μορδία (10th cent.). Compare German Morduiner (1730 in the passage translated in quot. 1736 at sense A. 1).The ultimate origin of the name has been the subject of etymological speculation. Connections with Indo-European roots with the meaning ‘cannibal’ or with the Androphagi of Herodotus have been largely discounted. It has also been suggested that the name might have cognates in Komi and Udmurt or in Indo-Iranian with the meaning ‘man’. Mordvin and Mordva are not currently used as self-designations by the peoples, who prefer to identify themselves as Erzya or Moksha.
