单词 moree
释义

moreen.

Brit. /ˈmɔːri/, U.S. /ˈmɔri/
Forms: 1600s mooree, 1600s mooreis (plural), 1600s murree (plural), 1600s– moree, 1700s moore, 1700s mouri, 1800s moories (plural), 1800s– moory.
Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: Dutch moeris, mouris.
Etymology: < Dutch †moeris (1637), †mouris (1631–4) < Malay mori, muri (usually in kain muri (kain cloth) plain white cotton or linen cloth); further etymology uncertain (compare Javanese mori undyed cotton cloth (15th cent. or later in Middle Javanese), probably < a South Asian language). Compare also Portuguese morim cloth (1684), Persian muri silk cloth. N.E.D. (1908) enters this under moory and gives the pronunciation as (mūə·ri) /ˈmʊərɪ/.
Now rare (archaic and historical).
Usually in plural (sometimes with singular agreement or as a mass noun). A kind of fine Indian cotton cloth.
