Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymon: morel n.²

Etymology: Probably an alteration of morel n.² with substitution of -ello suffix for the ending, perhaps after Italian morello dark-coloured (see morel n.²). In form morella perhaps influenced by Italian regional amarella (see further discussion s.v. morel n.³).

A dark variety of sour cherry, used chiefly in cooking; the tree producing this fruit ( Prunus cerasus). Also morello cherry.
