Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly a borrowing from Croatian. Etymons: French Morlaque; Italian Morlacco; Croatian Morlak.

Etymology: Partly < French Morlaque (1622 or earlier), partly < Italian Morlacco (1536; plural Morlacchi ), and partly < Croatian Morlak (also in form Morovlah; plural Morlaci ), all < post-classical Latin Morovlachus (12th cent.; also Moroblachus , Morolacchus ), Morlachus , Morlacchus (from 1420; also rendered Nigri Latini ) < Byzantine Greek Μαυρόβλαχος < μαῦρος black (see Moor n.²) + Βλάχος Vlach (see Vlach n.). The people were apparently so called from their dark clothing, but compare the etymology of Montenegro (see Montenegrin n. and adj.).

A member of a Vlach people centred originally on the eastern Adriatic port of Ragusa (modern Dubrovnik), and later inhabiting more northerly parts of the Dalmatian coast and its hinterland, the whole region being known at one time as Morlacchia.
