Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian mosso.
Etymology: < Italian mosso moved, stirred, agitated (1255 or earlier; 1584 as a musical term), past participle of muovere to move, stir, excite (1219) < classical Latin movēre move v. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives the less naturalized pronunciation (mǫ·so) /ˈmosso/.
Music.
Of musical movement, or as a tempo designation: animated; rapid. Usually with modifying word, as più (see più adv.), meno (see meno adv.).
