Etymology: < Spanish motilón, lit. ‘shaven-headed one’ (1627 in sense A. 1; 1552 in sense ‘tonsured lay friar’) < motilar to cut the hair, Aragonese variant of mutilar to mutilate (1553) < classical Latin mutilāre mutilate v. + -ón -oon suffix.The term was originally applied by Spanish conquistadors to certain peoples living in and around the northern tip of the Andes on account of their custom of shaving their hair at the back and sides and leaving only the top to grow. Shaving continued to be practised among Motilon men, women, and children in the late 20th cent., and would sometimes include eyebrows or eyelashes in addition to taking the hair down to the scalp (S. Beckerman, personal communication). The plural form Motilones is probably an adoption of the Spanish plural form rather than a pluralizing of English Motilone.

A member of any of various peoples living in and around the Colombian and Venezuelan Andes and in the lowlands around Lake Maracaibo.The peoples are divided into two main groups living in geographically contiguous areas, but with distinct languages and cultures. The better-known group, known locally as Motilones bravos and speaking a Chibchan language, are now more commonly called the Bari. The lesser-known Motilones mansos, speakers of a Carib language, are now commonly called the Yukpa.
