A type of bicycle typically having a sturdy but lightweight frame, broad, deeply treaded tyres, multiple gears, and straight handlebars, originally designed for riding in mountainous terrain.Quot. 1966 probably refers to a motorbike, as mountain bicycles were only produced in c1980 (although standard bicycles were modified by cyclists for off-road conditions during the 1970s: see quot. 1972).
