Etymology: < mucous adj. + layer n. In sense 1 after German Schleimschicht (C. H. Pander Beiträge zur Entwickelungsgeschichte des Hähnchens im Eye (1817) 11). With sense 3 compare rete mucosum n. and German Schleimnetz (1863 or earlier).
