Forms: 1600s bagatell, baggatelle, bagatello, 1600s–1700s bagatel, 1700s– bagatelle.
Etymology: < French bagatelle, < Italian bagatella , a diminutive form which Diez attaches to Parmesan bagata a little property, probably < baga : see baggage n. and adj. With bagatello , compare -ado suffix . Formerly quite naturalized in sense 1, now scarcely so; sense 2 is purely English in origin and use.
