Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin multiplicator.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin multiplicator (4th cent. in the context of human reproduction; 6th cent. (Boethius) in sense 1a; c1115 in a British source in this sense) < classical Latin multiplicāt- , past participial stem of multiplicāre multiply v. + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French, French multiplicateur (1515), Italian moltiplicatore (1310 in more general sense in form multiplicatore, a1374 in mathematical sense in form multipricatore), Spanish multiplicador (1512; 1494 as adjective).In sense 1b after German Multiplikator (I. Schur 1904, in Jrnl. f. die reine u. angewandte Math. 127 23).
