Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin mūnificent-, mūnificentior.
Etymology: < classical Latin mūnificent-, stem of mūnificentior, comparative form (and of mūnificentissimus , superlative form) corresponding to mūnificus munific adj. Compare Italian munificente (1483).French munificent is attested only much later (1840). The form of the English word is influenced by earlier magnificent adj. and munificence n.1
Characterized by abundance. Of a person, institution, etc.: very generous; bountiful. Of a gift or sum of money: larger or more generous than is usual or necessary.
