Etymology: < Sinhala mudalāli and its etymon Tamil mutalāḷi proprietor < mutal property. Compare mudaliyar n.
In Sri Lanka and southern India: a proprietor, a business person, an entrepreneur (esp. one not affecting Western dress and not doing business in English).
