Etymology: Origin doubtful. Possibly a dialect form of *becch , betch , answering to an Old English *bęcc , = Old Norse bekkr , English beck n.¹ < Germanic *bakjo-z, cognate with Old English bęce < Germanic *baki-z, brook, rivulet, stream. The transference of meaning fromstream to stream-valley would be parallel to the north English and Lowland Scots use of -burn, -water, in proper names, for the whole river-vale or dale.
