Forms: 1500s munde (perhaps transmission error), 1600s– mundle, 1800s– mundel, 1800s– mungle (English regional (Cheshire)).
Origin: Probably a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Probably the reflex of a borrowing < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic möndull handle, especially of a handmill) < the Scandinavian base of Old Icelandic mund hand (see mund n.) + the Scandinavian base of Old Icelandic -ull -le suffix 1.
Now English regional (chiefly midlands), Welsh English, and Newfoundland.
A stick or similar wooden utensil (often with one flat end) used for stirring.
