In Kerala and other parts of southern India: a large piece of cloth worn wrapped around the waist and (when worn by men) frequently having the lower back edge pulled up between the legs and tucked into the waistband. ΚΠ 1918 Jrnl. Royal Anthropol. Inst. 48 287 The typical Nāyar (male) clothing is the Mundu. This is generally 2½ yards long, 1½ yards broad, cloth of fine texture. 1971 Femina (Bombay) 2 Apr. 24 The ‘mundu’ of the Kerala village belle comes to town in striped handloom blue. 2000 Hindu (Electronic ed.) 13 Aug. V. K. Ramabhadran and some others insist that it is the mundu which is indigenous to Kerala and that the sari is an imposition by the Brahmins.
