A group of arthropods comprising the centipedes, millipedes, pauropods, and symphylans, which have elongated bodies with numerous leg-bearing segments; (with plural agreement) such arthropods collectively.The group originally consisted of only the centipedes and millipedes, which were regarded as insects by Linnaeus, Latreille, and others. J. C. Fabricius was the first to classify them as a group distinct from the insects, called by him Mitosata.
