Forms: Plural 1700s Myriophylla, 1900s– myriophyllums.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin myriophyllum.
Etymology: < scientific Latin myriophyllum (1728 or earlier) < classical Latin myriophyllon water milfoil (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek μυριόϕυλλον water milfoil (Dioscorides, Galen) < ancient Greek μυρίος countless (see myriad n.) + ϕύλλον leaf (see phyllo- comb. form). Compare milfoil n., and French myriophylle (1803). Compare also the synonymous Hellenistic Greek χιλιόϕυλλος < χίλιοι thousand + ϕύλλον leaf.
Botany.
A genus of aquatic plants (family Haloragaceae) having whorls of submerged feathery leaves and emergent flower spikes, some species being cultivated in ponds and aquariums; (also myriophyllum) a plant of this genus, a water milfoil.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 992.
