Etymology: Either < myrmeci- (in scientific Latin Myrmeciinae , subfamily name < Myrmecia , genus name (see below) + -inae -inae suffix) + -oid suffix, or directly < scientific Latin Myrmecia, genus name (J. C. Fabricius Systema Piezatorum (1804) 423; < ancient Greek μυρμηκ- (see myrmeco- comb. form) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix²) + -oid suffix.
