Etymology: < German Myrmekit (J. J. Sederholm 1897, in Bull. de la Comm. Géol. de la Finlande 1 vi. 113) < ancient Greek μυρμηκιά anthill, wart ( < μυρμηκ- , μύρμηξ ant (see myrmeco- comb. form) + -ία -ia suffix¹) + German -it -ite suffix¹.Apparently coined independently of classical Latin myrmēcītis (in post-classical Latin also myrmecites ) a kind of precious stone having the impression of an ant < ancient Greek μύρμηξ + classical Latin -ītis -ite suffix¹.

Geology.

An intergrowth of plagioclase containing drops or wormlike forms of quartz.
