Etymology: < ancient Greek μυρμηκ-, μύρμηξ ant (see myrmeco- comb. form) + -ine suffix5. In specific application (and in form myrmicine ) after scientific Latin Myrmicinae, subfamily name < Myrmica , genus name (P. A. Latreille in Nouveau dict. d'hist. nat. (1804) XXIV. (Tableaux méthodiques) 179/1) + -inae -inae suffix.With -i- in the second syllable of the genus name compare classical Latin formīca ant (see formica n.1), and post-classical Latin forms s.v. Myrmeleon n. N.E.D. (1908) gives only the pronunciation (mə̄·ɹmisəin) /ˈmɜːmɪsaɪn/.
