Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French myrosine.
Etymology: < French myrosine (A. Bussy 1840, in Jrnl. de pharmacie 26 44; compare German Myrosyne (A. Bussy 1840, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 34 224)) < ancient Greek μύρον unguent, perfume (see myronic adj.) + French -ine -in suffix1, with epenthetic -s- (perhaps, as suggested by Trésor de la langue française, after émulsine emulsin n.).With myrosin cell compare French cellule à myrosine (1890) and German Myrosinzelle (1905; compare also German Myrosinbehälter (1909 in the passage translated in quot. 1914 for myrosin cell n. at Compounds)). N.E.D. (1908) gives only the pronunciation (məiə·rŏsin) /ˈmaɪərəsɪn/.
